Maasai Youth Outreach Organization MAYOO is a registered self-help organization located in Maasailand at Ngong Hills, approximately 35 kilometers west of Nairobi. The organization was founded in 2006 by one Maasai university student and with the help of Maasai Youth with the aim of fostering sustainable development in the Maasai community through the mobilization and education of Maasai youth. It was jumpstarted with a collection of funds raised by Maasai youth, which allowed the founders to purchase 8 goats and 2 oxen in 2006, knowing that in a couple of years the livestock would fatten and grow to give them enough money to ensure the smooth initial running of the MAYOO organization. Since then MAYOO has been successful in implementing kitchen gardens for Maasai widows to enhance their food security, improving upon the road to increase access to the local market economy, and supporting the community’s orphans by ensuring they have the necessary items for their education (school fees, uniform, etc.) in 2009, MAYOO was able to assist 5 orphans with fees for secondary school as well as facilitate seminars and workshops for the Maasai community on children’s rights.
The founders are Jonathon Saoyo, a student of the Kenya Institute of Management, and Elijah Olkupai both of whom grew up within the indigenous Maasai community and have risen through the education system against all odds. Jonathon and Elijah are role models and leaders amongst the Maasai community for their dedication to their culture, education, and to raising the living standard of the Maasai community. Their examples have mobilized youth to join MAYOO and collectively uplift their community.
